Culture

The Local Government Arts- and Cultural Amenities in Smedjebacken are responsible for the public library and to develop various cultural environments and organize activities for children as well as adults.

Cultural environmental conservation

The power of nature and its assets, rapid rivers, great forests and mountains rich in ore have, for hundreds of years, together with the people created the cultural province of Bergslagen.
The mining- and iron handling have in a special way influenced and characterized the history in the area and is the foundation of the industry that still exists today.
The exciting industrial history is today part of the community´s development due to extended tourism in the area.
The municipality of Smedjebacken is working through the administration of culture to foremost preserve, enlarge the accessibility and to develop the visitors mine in Flogberget and the smelting-house in Flatenberg, but they also actively work to develop Gamla Meken (an old rolling-mill building today used for different cultural events) and the harbor area.

The mine in Flogberget is located between Ludvika and Smedjebacken and is open for visitors all year around. During the summer season guided tours are offered on a daily basis, above ground as well as below. In the mining house café one can drink coffee, eat pastries and enjoy the marvelous view over forests and lakes.
During a number of summer evenings one can experience the mine hoist, a play that shows what it was like to live around the mine one hundred years ago

The smelting-works area is open to visitors all year around. During the summer season guided tours are offered to the public. Every so often special events are offered for example days for families, where the adults as well as the children can try smith work and watch plays that are especially suitable for children.

Here one can see and experience art, opera, music, movies, smith work, trade fairs and different kinds of exhibitions to mention a few different things. Gamla Meken has in a very short time become a great meeting point for locals as well as visitors.
